For a community to be great, it needs to have the positive participation of all its citizens. Wherever Petro-Canada employees live and work, we do our part to be good neighbours as well. Playing our part in the local communities where we have a business presence, we invest in community infrastructure, the United Way, youth initiatives, the fight against cancer and grassroots live arts and culture.
Some of our current partnerships are:
- The Calgary Homeless Foundation, Project Homeless Connect (PHC), Calgary, AB — PHC is a one-day event, to be held four times in 2009, where homeless or low income individuals and families can access medical treatment, counselling, housing, new identification documents, income support, employment and education opportunities. Haircuts, comfort kits, meals and clothing are also provided. Petro-Canada employees get involved by collecting donation items and volunteering their time at PHC events.
- Millennium Place, Sherwood Park, AB — Petro-Canada renewed support of the County of Strathcona for the Petro-Canada Sport and Wellness Centre in Sherwood Park. This $100,000 renewal was announced with the launch of a two-week fitness challenge that included schools, the general public, Petro-Canada and Millennium Place employees.
- Family International Community Services (FICS), Syria — FICS is a non-profit, non-denominational organization staffed entirely by part-time and full-time volunteers dedicated to serving the community. Petro-Canada has provided $10,000 to support FICS in its educational role helping orphan and refugee children to learn about health and hygiene, environmental awareness and to help them develop a love of learning. A number of Petro-Canada employees in Syria also volunteer their leisure time to support FICS.
- Medicine Hat and District Hospital Foundation, Medicine Hat, AB — Petro-Canada provided $110,000 to the Foundation for colonoscopy equipment. The Medicine Hat Regional Hospital now has the latest technology to screen for and diagnose colorectal cancers.
- St. John’s Boys and Girls Club, St. John's, NL — Building on a long-term relationship with the Club, Petro-Canada recently provided $500,000 toward the construction of a new 10,000 square foot Petro-Canada named building in Buckmaster’s Circle. This addition will increase accessibility for area children to the great programs offered by the Boys and Girls Club in St. John’s.
- Aberdeen Foyer Project, Aberdeen, Scotland — In 2008, our £10,000 in support is assisting this charity in its work to prevent and alleviate youth homelessness and unemployment.
- United Way — Petro-Canada supports the work of the United Way in addressing the important needs of many people and organizations across Canada and in our U.S. Rockies region. In those communities where Petro-Canada is present, our Company and employees give generously each year through their time, talents and finances. In 2008, combined corporate, employee, retiree and special event contributions totalled more than $3.48 million.
