Retail security in the gasoline and convenience store industry is currently in a state of flux. With increasing frequency of violent crimes, it has become a critical priority to take all steps necessary so people have the tools and training to keep safe. To that end, Petro-Canada has an extensive suite of site operating procedures, protocols and equipment that provide our associates with guidance and direction on the safe and secure operation of their sites.
Security protocols include:
- providing explicit directives on cash control, coupled with time delay opening/dispensing drop safes so only small amounts of cash are immediately available, particularly during the night;
- introducing in 2008-2009 a new safe (designed specifically for Petro-Canada) in conjunction with a new “Cash in Transit” process covering a broad range of our retail sites to assist in minimizing available cash;
- having uncluttered front windows to provide clear sightlines into and out of the site;
- initiation of a new corporate security site inspection program;
- using bright internal and external lighting to enhance visibility and safety of both our guests and attendants;
- designing sites for easy access, optimum traffic flow and safety. Gasoline dispensing islands are equipped with intercoms to allow for communication between guests and service attendants;
- equipping many convenience stores with the latest in digital video recorders, complete with multiple cameras to monitor fuelling activity and deter robberies, as well as to provide accurate and easy images to local police, if required;
- strategically positioning video screens to let guests see they are being monitored;
- prominently displaying signage advising that the premises are being observed by video surveillance equipment for security and privacy reasons;
- equipping most convenience stores with electric door locks for night security;
- installing pass-through windows at some sites to provide our attendants with added security for late-night operations — these allow service without entry into the store;
- specific pumps being designated as “pre-pay” only with the adoption of WorkSafeBC legislation mandating 24-hour pre-payment for fuel;
- testing internal glass barriers at some urban sites;
- encouraging and providing site operators with the tools to carry out regular self-assessments to assist in identifying safety and security concerns — leading to upgrades to protect site operating staff and our guests,
- incorporating industry-leading practices into both online and face-to-face security training for retail site operators, and
- initiation of a high level “Rack Forward, Site Security Steering Committee” to oversee and encourage ongoing security improvements
