In our ongoing efforts toward advancing the safety culture in Petro-Canada, we adopted measures to introduce some new tools and initiatives to aid us in safely advancing six major growth projects over five years. We developed new, interactive online Total Loss Management (TLM) training modules as a means of reinforcing our safety message among all employees. These modules are one component in our refreshed “Orientation and Onboarding” program that welcomes and introduces new employees to the Company, our culture and our processes for conducting business. Our safety expectations and standards are clearly communicated on Day 1 of the job.
Below are some examples of safety initiatives implemented in 2008:
- A front-line supervisor safety training initiative was kicked off with the mandate of developing a framework for enhancing the safety capabilities and behaviours of our front-line supervisors
- A contractor/service provider TLM engagement initiative has begun to develop strategies and tools for reducing contractor injuries at Petro-Canada
- We re-examined the way we shared learnings from events across the organization and are working to close gaps identified in our processes.
Leadership at Petro-Canada is convinced that Zero-Harm is possible and that the task of improving safety across the organization is the responsibility of all workers, including our business partners and contractors. To this end, leadership visibility at the front line, honest and open communication with workers, demonstrated safe work behaviours and an overall commitment to safe work are essential for our continued success.
