| Major Environmental Opportunities and Risks |
Opportunities:
- Developing more environmentally responsible energy
- Reducing resource consumption (e.g., energy, water, etc.) and wastes means more efficient operations
Risks:
- Costs associated with greenhouse gas and air emissions
- Land and wildlife disturbance
- Leaks and spills
|
| Policy |
- Our Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) Policy was adopted in 2005, and was most recently revised in 2007.
|
| Operational Responsibility |
- Our vice president, sustainable development, is responsible for integrating environmental management systems and performance measures across our operations.
- Business unit vice presidents are directly responsible for implementation of policies and practices.
- Company-wide teams of environmental experts help ensure best practices are developed and shared across our businesses.
|
| Key Strategies and Procedures for Implementation |
- We are guided by an EH&S management system standard that defines Suncor's practices and procedures around environmental management.
- We adopted a seven-point climate change action plan in 1997 that addresses the issue from numerous angles. There is no silver bullet solution.
- Our environmental excellence strategy reinforces our commitment throughout the organization. It's aimed at reducing energy and water consumption and waste.
- We conduct life cycle value assessments on all major projects to help evaluate the impacts of each stage.
|
| Major Changes to Systems or Structures to Improve Performance |
- Suncor became a Ceres company in 2007. Ceres is a coalition of investors, environmental groups and other public interest organizations. Through participation in Ceres we expect to improve our stakeholder engagement efforts, reporting practices, and performance.
|
| Training and Awareness |
- Environmental excellence is included in the orientation process for new Suncor employees.
- Hundreds of employees in environmental protection roles receive training every year on relevant subjects.
- In conjunction with SAIT and the Pembina Institute, we offer employees a series of seminars called “Sustainability at Suncor.”
|
| Monitoring and Follow-up |
- We conduct internal EHS compliance audits annually. Corrective actions for shortcomings are identified and implemented. An external body audits our environmental management system every three years.
- We monitor air quality and water discharges at several of our facilities.
|
| Goals and Performance |
- We have set environmental targets around air emissions, land disturbance, water use and energy efficiency. All targets can be found at www.suncor.com/sustainability.
- All performance data can be found at www.suncor.com/sustainability.
|
| Key Successes and Shortcomings |
- We started operations at our 76 megawatt wind power facility near Ripley, Ontario in 2007, effectively doubling our wind power generation to 147 megawatts.
- Suncor was named to Fortune magazine's global list of ten companies that go beyond what is required to operate in an environmentally responsible way.
- We have been able to reduce our water use intensity during the past six years.
- Due to construction and unplanned shutdowns in the past two years we have not been able to reduce our greenhouse gas and air emissions intensity.
- The percentage of land reclaimed (out of total land disturbed) has been decreasing since 2003. This is expected to change in 2010, when we create a trafficable surface with progressive reclamation well underway on Pond 1.
- Our Oil Sands operations were issued two separate enforcement actions from Alberta Environment and the Energy Resources Conservation Board for excessive air quality emissions. The regulators imposed production and emission caps, and required the submission of a formal action plan and ongoing reporting.
