In 2007 the renewable energy and business development group, a sub-unit that was originally part of Natural Gas, began reporting to the R&M Canada business unit. 2007 and 2008 numbers reflect this change but past year values have not been adjusted as the effect on the performance indicators has been deemed to be negligible. Also in 2008 the Sun Canadian Pipeline and SEMI groups were removed from reporting requirements in the R&M Canada business unit. 2008 numbers reflect this change but past year values have not been adjusted as the effect on the performance indicators has been deemed to be negligible. Unless otherwise specified, all environment data includes data from Suncor's Canadian refineries, terminals and retail sites. Beginning in 2007 data also includes Suncor's ethanol plant.

Suncor-Wide Environment Footnotes

A	Gross production includes product that is internally consumed at the Sarnia refinery. It represents emissions associated with total refinery throughput as opposed to only saleable product. Gross production differs from net production in the economic performance section.
B	Total gross production includes product that is internally consumed at the Sarnia refinery and ethanol production from Suncor's ethanol plant and is used to calculate emission intensities.
C	Includes indirect emissions reductions as a result of blending ethanol into product gasoline. The reductions vary each year, but range from 84,000 to 168,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
D	Data does not include terminals for 2004.
E	Energy consumption includes natural gas firing and the import of steam and electrical power.
F	Suncor has developed four wind power projects: SunBridge, in partnership with a subsidiary of Enbridge Income Fund (commissioned in 2002, with a total installed wind capacity of 11MW), Magrath (commissioned in 2006 with a total capacity of 30MW), Chin Chute (commissioned in 2006 with a total capacity of 30MW) in partnership with Enbridge Income Fund and Acciona Wind Power Canada Inc. and Ripley (commissioned in 2007 with a total capacity of 76MW) in partnership with Acciona Wind Power Canada Inc. This is gross capacity of these wind power projects, not net to Suncor.
G	These values are composites of metered data. At the Sarnia refinery more water is returned than drawn because additional water is collected from rainfall, snowfall, potable municipal water, condensing steam and water stripped out during the refining process. Returning water undergoes primary and secondary biological oxidation treatment.
H	This indicator is for the Sarnia refinery only. 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 includes water purchased.
I	Water used in retail stores to operate car washes, which is treated to remove solids and oils before entering the sewer system.
J	The volume weighted annual average.
K	Major incidents are environment, health or safety incidents that result in a permanent disability or fatality, punitive action by government, having catastrophic environmental impact, or significant impact to the company's reputation.
L	A regulatory contravention is a failure to meet the conditions specified in operating approvals, permits, or licenses.
M	Spills at retail sites, the terminals and the refinery reported to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.
N	Includes exceedances of regulatory limits and abnormal effluents.
O	Spills that enter the St. Clair River directly, or spills into collection systems that exceed downstream treatment capabilities and result in the release of substances into the St. Clair River. In July 2005, an impounding basin overflowed due to an intense rainfall. As the basin was at maximum capacity and in a state of overflow, a spill volume could not be attained.
P	Includes smoke emissions from flares and heater exhaust stacks, and any abnormal emission such as flue gas venting.
Q	Data includes regulatory fines related to environmental, health and safety contraventions paid during the stated year, as well as charitable activities and donations made in lieu of penalties. The fines paid in 2007 and 2008 are as follows: 2007 - In May 2007 a settlement was reached with the Ministry for a fine of $125,000 on two charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OH&SA) for an incident that occurred in March 2005. Insulation was being removed under the assumption that it was asbestos-free. The insulation did in fact contain asbestos and three contract workers were exposed. In this case Suncor did not report the incident in writing and did not provide pressurized respirators for the task. 2008 — Two fines were received in 2008 totaling $250,000 from the Ministry under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The first fine of $156,000 was received for an incident that occurred in 2006 where eleven workers were exposed to an amine and hydrogen sulphide release during project Genesis construction. The second fine of $94,000 was received for another incident that occurred in 2006 where twenty-three workers were exposed to hydrofluoric acid. No one was hurt but all workers were sent to first aid as a precaution.

U	A lost-time injury requires medical attention and results in an employee being absent from work on the next regularly scheduled work day or any subsequent work day. Lost-time injury frequency is the number of such injuries per 200,000 hours worked.
V	Recordable injuries include lost time injuries as well as medical aid injuries. Medical aid injuries require medical attentions but do not result in an employee being absent from work. Recordable injury frequency is the sum of lost time and medical aid injuries per 200,000 hours worked.
W	Compares R&M's full-time base wage to Ontario's minimum wage. In 2007 we used $8.00/hour for minimum wage; in 2008 we used $8.75/hour.
