As planning progressed for the Voyageur upgrader, Suncor began looking for ways to make highway traffic in the area safer for all motorists. In order to provide safe access, Suncor signed an agreement in April 2008 with the Province of Alberta for the construction and maintenance of a new interchange on Alberta Highway 63. Highway 63 is the main artery for the northeast part of the province, leading from Edmonton to Fort McMurray and points north.
Officially opened in December 2008, the freeway-style interchange links the oil sands base plant on the east side of Highway 63 with the Voyageur upgrader and other planned developments on the west side. The interchange is located 25 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, and is designed to improve highway safety in the area during the construction and operation of our Voyageur upgrader.
Under the agreement, Suncor paid for and constructed the $55 million interchange. The agreement also provides for a transfer of ownership of the interchange to the province following completion.
