Safety

Construction workersSuncor considers safety our top priority. We strive to make personal and process safety an integral part of our workplace culture—a shared mindset that must be supported and practiced, from the boardroom to the plant floor.

In 2002, Suncor launched Journey to Zero, which aims to eliminate workplace injuries. Based on the standard industry safety measures, we are seeing positive results. Between 2002 and 2008, the frequency of lost-time injuries among Suncor employees and contractors declined by nearly two-thirds while the frequency of recordable injuries dropped by half.

We achieved these safety improvements during a period when all of our major operations went through significant expansion, maintenance or upgrade phases that saw thousands of additional contractors working at our sites.

The dedication of Suncor employees and contractors to safe work practices is also reflected in several significant milestones.

As of April 2009:

  • Refining and Marketing Canada worked 9.5 million person hours without a lost-time injury (LTI).
  • Oil Sands Extraction: 5 million person hours LTI free.
  • Oil Sands Upgrading: 2 million person hours LTI free.
  • Refining and Marketing USA: 1.6 million person hours LTI free.

Safety Initiatives 2007-2008

In mid-2007, Suncor's corporate environment, health and safety (EH&S) management began reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO). That meant EH&S concerns from all business units could be brought directly to the attention of the COO for corrective action.

In 2007 and 2008, EH&S implemented a more systematic approach to auditing performance. Over a continuous three-year cycle, all of Suncor's business units are being audited to assure proper identification of potential risks, implementation of measures to eliminate or mitigate risks, and monitoring of their success.

In 2008, Suncor also launched a major process safety management initiative to improve the level and performance of process safety across our operations. Suncor is committed to ongoing Environment Health and Safety (EHS) system development and continual improvement initiatives.
