Suncor's International Corporate Security policy is based on five core company security principles:
Suncor management has committed itself to an international human rights policy:
The purpose of a corporate international security policy is to outline procedures for reconciling adherence to the laws of the countries in which Suncor operates. This includes honouring the spirit of international agreements to which Suncor is a signatory or informal adherent.
The company's commitment to international security management is largely shaped by local laws in the operating area, and the senior management commitment (formal or informal) to international agreements. The key document structuring international security policy, as noted in Suncor's Human Rights Policy Statement, is:
Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (PDF, 6 pp., 51 KB)
While Suncor is not a corporate participant to the voluntary principles, the Government of Canada is.
Suncor Corporate Security has programs to effectively safeguard our employees in light of potential security risks to their personal safety in some countries. We continue to use independent country risk assessments to evaluate our risks and develop strategies. Employees, both in-country and visitors, can get immediate access to up-to-date information on all aspects of a region, including political and security-related news and advisories, as well as information on cultural sensitivities.
