Our goal is to ensure new employees feel welcomed and valued and become full contributors as quickly as possible. We know that effective orientation and onboarding play a critical role in making that happen — and that's why we take both seriously.
Our employee orientation program is participant-centred and helps the newest members of our Suncor team understand our mission, vision, values and culture — all with an emphasis on a safety-first mindset.
Our one-day orientation program affirms the reasons new employees chose Suncor. Attendees leave the session equipped with foundational information about the company as well as a new hire checklist that outlines the key actions they need to complete in the first few days after joining us. Our new hire resource guide provides a summary of the support resources available to them.
Our onboarding program extends beyond day one with a formal process for checkpoints at one week, 30 days, 60 days and 90 days. Our program features a personalized onboarding plan focusing on four key elements:
Our leaders have primary responsibility for creating a positive onboarding experience for their new hire, including the personalized plan and ensuring new employees and contractors feel welcome as soon as they start.
Hiring leaders are supported through the onboarding process by an onboarding co-ordinator/liaison who is assigned to help them to navigate the process, including co-ordinating the tools, resources and access each Suncor newcomer needs on their first day.
Leaders are encouraged to assign a buddy who provides day-to-day contact and support, an essential practice for enhancing productivity. Suncor leaders are provided with guides, checklists and templates to help them prepare onboarding plans for their new team members — ensuring all new employees have a consistent experience.
