At Suncor, we use our purpose – to provide trusted energy that enhances people’s lives, while caring for each other and the earth – to guide our decisions and actions. Our purpose embodies our commitment to sustainability and is our guide in these times of uncertainty. The world is contending with a global pandemic which has not only impacted lives, but has brought about disruptions to financial markets, businesses and the way we work and live. The crisis is also highlighting how interconnected environmental, social and economic systems are, and how our collective actions can have an enormous impact when we work together to find solutions. We all have a role to play in our shared energy future.
As much as our world has changed through COVID-19, Suncor remains fully committed to our strategy, sustainability leadership and our role in the energy transition to a low-carbon future. Our commitment is unwavering and continues to be at the heart of everything we do.
Hear Mark Little, president and chief executive officer, talk about sustainability at Suncor, and what that means during times of crisis.

Mark Little (00:00):
In a world facing enormous global challenges – whether it’s climate change or a pandemic or racism – now, more than ever, we need to do more. At Suncor, we talk about these challenges in terms of looking after people, planet and prosperity. And it’s foundational to our approach to sustainability and how we see ourselves responding.Mark Little (00:33):
Sustainability starts with our purpose — to deliver trusted energy that enhance people’s lives while caring for each other and the earth. Our purpose links to our business strategy and how we remain competitive, all while charting a path to greater economic and social well-being. This year we set a strategic objective to be a net-zero emissions company by 2050, in step with society. Our plan to get there has three critical components.Mark Little (01:07):
The first is reducing emissions from our oil sands base business through energy efficiency improvements, fuel switching, and carbon capture and storage. The second is expanding our existing businesses in renewable fuels, electricity and clean hydrogen. These are sectors already integral to Suncor and where we have deep understanding and experience. The third is working with customers, suppliers, and governments to further reduce emissions. For example, we’re investing in sustainable aviation fuel or converting household waste into biofuels.Mark Little (01:51):
And we’re doing all this while evolving how we engage and support communities and people – whether it’s our neighbours near our operations, or the people within our workplace, or the individuals in the larger world around us. This year, I’m particularly proud of our equity partnerships with Indigenous communities, the progress on inclusion and diversity and the launch of our Petro-Canada CareMakers Foundation. We need to keep having deep dialogue, critical conversations and fostering empathy. These can lead to the meaningful actions that shift our culture toward greater equity, inclusion and belonging.
Mark Little (02:27):
These can lead to the meaningful actions that shift our culture toward greater equity, inclusion and belonging. It’s an ongoing journey and at Suncor we fully embrace our role to both shape — and lead — our shared, sustainable energy future.
